Welcome to our Development Office

ISA’s Development Office seeks additional funding for the school for several reasons:

  1. Donors and volunteers enable ISA to innovate and grow in the competitive education environment surrounding us.
  2. Enrollment increases have placed huge demands on available resources.
  3. Annual contributions and event proceeds help bridge the gap between the school’s revenues and day-to-day expenses, as well as to fund special projects and strategic initiatives as determined by the Board of Directors and administration.
  4. Tuition alone does not assure ISA’s growth.  Non-profit, independent schools in the United States are not subsidized by the government, and ISA is not subsidized directly by the French or Spanish governments.
  5. In addition to asking members of the ISA community for monetary support, we seek funds from external sources including individual donors, companies, and foundations.  Before considering a gift to ISA, they want to see that the parents, faculty, and staff are fully invested in the school.
  6. High Annual Fund participation demonstrates the community’s commitment to the school’s mission and academic excellence, which make up our strength and reputation, and are important to ISA’s long-term health.

Your support will keep ISA positioned to meet the challenges as well as take advantage of the opportunities.  Your continued support, as volunteers and donors, will be crucial to our future success.

In the following pages, you will find information on ways to support ISA.  We welcome your interest, your questions, your comments, and your help.  Thank you for your generosity, and for supporting this unique, excellent educational institution.

Annual Fund

Your contribution to the annual fund helps close the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of education.  If the International School of Arizona is to strategically plan for the future and compete in the global environment, it needs additional funding.  Your support is vital.  Contributions are tax-deductible and make a difference for students, every day.  Your generosity and the generosity of many others in the community will result in tangible benefits to students by allowing ISA to:

  • Give our talented faculty all the resources they need to provide an outstanding educational experience
  • Improve ISA’s technology infrastructure to maintain an extraordinary academic and learning environment
  • Address the growing financial needs for educational and curriculum enrichment
  • Offer need-based scholarships and financial aid programs in support of diversity in our student body
  • Build funds for a new and expanded campus, as enrollment continues to increase and current site’s lease expires in 2014

Matching Gifts:  You may double or even triple the amount of your personal gift by taking advantage of corporate matching gift programs.  Many companies match their employee’s donations dollar for dollar.  Some will double that match.  Simply ask your employer for the matching gift form and enclose with your gift to ISA.  We will take care of filling out and returning the necessary paperwork to your employer.

New Campus Fund

The International School of Arizona (ISA) has experienced a doubling of enrollment in five years, and continues to grow despite a tough economic climate in Arizona. ISA will be out of extra space in two years. The campus is landlocked, and the building footprint does not allow additions. A new campus will better meet the language-immersion educational needs of our most precious resource – our children.

A Building Committee was formed in 2007, and architects at The Orcutt/Winslow Partnership reviewed ISA’s facilities related options and developed a Planning Schedule. Timing of the implementation of each option was also a critical issue reviewed in the study. ISA is now in the ‘Land Acquisition’ phase of development, after studying the feasibility of sites and preparing specifications for the future campus (build or lease). ISA’s current lease extends until 2014. There are currently limited administrative and meeting spaces, and no outdoor athletic facilities beyond a small playground.

With a proposed doubling of space from the present 14,183 sq. ft., to the projected 28,000 sq. ft., ISA’s strategic plan envisions, as funds become available, a middle school and high school on the same campus. The current facility can accommodate 250 students, with the need for pre-K through 5th at the New Campus to house 360 students. Both the middle school and high school at the new location are envisioned to be 28,000 sq. ft. facilities, for a total of 84,000 sq. ft. desired, and an eventual capacity of over 800 students.

Like other donations to ISA, New Campus contributions are tax deductible, and will make a great difference in making our dream of a larger, more permanent location come true. There are many ways to contribute to this fund:

  • Make a cash donation that is restricted to the new Campus Fund.
  • Donate land or a building for which you or your company have no plans.
  • If you are a contractor, make a donation of labor and/or materials.
  • Make a pledge, for building naming rights.

The International School of Arizona provides a uniquely engaged learning experience that ensures students have the empathy, intellectual ingenuity, and courage to lead in an ever-changing 21st century world.

Students with a dual language background develop resourcefulness that crosses boundaries and disciplines. The reasons for the planned New Campus are numerous. Among the most compelling, however, is that ISA is the only Spanish/French full language-immersion pre-K through 5th Grade school in the Valley. We are giving children what it will take to be citizens of the world. We’re global…and we’re growing.

Arizona Tax Credit Program

The Arizona Tax Credit program allows Arizona taxpayers to contribute up to $500 (individual) or $1,000 (married couples filing jointly) to a school tuition organization (STO) that provides grants to qualified schools. The Arizona Scholarship Fund (www.AZscholarships.org) is one such STO; others can be found at www.azdor.gov.  To be sure that your tax credit donation is allocated to ISA, please earmark your tax credit to go to ISA, and tell Arizona grandparents, friends, co-workers to do the same. You receive a dollar for dollar tax credit on the Arizona state income tax, so it costs you nothing. Individuals and couples must use Arizona Tax Credit Form 323.

The donations are used by ISA as partial scholarships to families who otherwise might not be able to afford our unique educational experience. This program benefits every student. Each additional child enrolled contributes to a strong student base, achieving the rich social and cultural environment ISA actively seeks to create.

Some companies allow credit eligible contributions to STO’s through payroll deduction. Check with your employer.  Also, you now have until April 15 of the following year to make a contribution for 2011.

www.azdor.gov is an excellent website to answer questions of taxpayers regarding claiming the credit. We are also available to help with questions regarding a person’s eligibility to participate in the Arizona Tax Credit program.

Planned Giving

You have the power to make a lasting impact on the International School of Arizona and our students through a planned gift. People help shape the global impact of future ISA students when they include the International School of Arizona in their estate plans.

Help shape the future; leave your mark. Through your will, you can leave:

  • a specific amount or a percentage of your estate
  • all or part of what remains in your estate after other bequests are made
  • a conditional gift if beneficiaries do not outlive you

Even those without a will can consider naming ISA as a beneficiary in their insurance policy or a retirement account.

In the same way you would with a will, you might consider a revocable trust, with wishes for distributing assets.  Importantly, in a will or revocable trust, you keep control as long as you live and you can change your plans whenever you wish.

Sample Language for Your Estate Plan

Once you have decided how you want to leave a bequest to ISA, you can use the following suggested language:

  • A specific amount or a percentage of your estate:
I give to the International School of Arizona, 9128 E. San Salvador Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 [specific dollar amount or percentage of my estate or specified asset]
  • All or a part of what remains in estate after other bequests are made:
I give to the International School of Arizona, 9128 E. San Salvador Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 all [or a %] of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate.
  • A conditional gift if beneficiaries do not outlive you:
If [other named beneficiary] does not survive me, I give to the International School of Arizona, 9128 E. San Salvador Drive, Scottsdale AZ 85258 all [or a %] of my estate.
  • The ISA federal tax identification number is 86-0900797.

FAQ

Donation FAQ
Select a question to expand and see answer.
We already pay tuition. Why do we also need to give to the Annual Fund?

Independent schools and universities in the United States commonly budget for a portion of the operating expense to come from fundraising.  This practice benefits families by keeping tuition at more affordable levels for all and allowing each family to make a tax-deductible contribution toward the remaining cost.  Tuition alone does not guarantee ISA’s growth.  Nonprofit, independent schools in the United States are not subsidized by the government.

Why doesn’t ISA just raise tuition instead of asking for donations?

Raising tuition to cover all of the costs of an ISA education, along with the growing student body, would limit the number of qualified students who could afford to attend.  Because ISA believes in offering an education to all capable students, we try to keep fees as low as possible and supplement enhancement costs with the tax-deductible Annual Fund Campaign.

I am not able to make a big gift. Is my participation really necessary?

YES!  EVERY Annual Fund gift makes a difference.  Foundations look for high parent participation (not the amount of the individual gifts, but the % of parents supporting the Annual Fund) as a criterion for awarding limited grant dollars.  Potential Major Gift donors look for this demonstration of parent commitment in making large gifts.  Plus, gifts of any amount have an impact somewhere in the school.

Our goal is 100% parent participation.

How much should I give?

How much to give is a very personal decision.  The intent of the Annual Fund Campaign is for each family to give according to their means.  Every gift is welcomed and appreciated.  Each gift is important and beneficial to the continued success and growth of each student and ISA at large.

We are only here for 2 years, so why should we give?

Donations received are put to use immediately at ISA and are used to develop and enhance programs in our current academic year.  It’s also important to realize that your children are directly benefiting from the generosity of families who have donated in the past.  The Annual Fund provides you with the opportunity to keep this cycle going.
